Volkswagen Christens its upcoming Global Sedan as “Virtus”, Premieres on March 8th
The New Global Sedan by Volkswagen is christened as Virtus and is the second product offering under the India 2.0 project. Based on the MQB A0 IN platform, the Virtus encompasses the core DNA of the brand that stands for superior build quality, safety and fun-to-drive experience. The name Virtus is a combination of the words ‘Virtuoso’ and ‘Virtues’ signifying excellence, finesse, energy and brilliance. Accordingly the carline has been designed and developed for those who seek experiences, are spirited and confidently standout in a crowd. Volkswagen says that the Virtus is set to create new benchmarks that will redefine and excite the premium midsize sedan segment in India.
“The new Volkswagen Virtus invigorates and impresses with its dynamic and emotional design language. The global sedan represents dynamism in its appeal and confidence in its character while retaining the core DNA of the brand. The Virtus is a perfect illustration of a sedan that meets the aspirations of customers in India with a truly global outlook.” said Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India.
Volkswagen’s new mid-size sedan for the Indian market will be the latest version of the Virtus sold abroad. However, it will be specifically developed for the Indian market with exports and launch in other countries to follow later. The India-spec new Volkswagen Virtus will share its underpinnings and mechanicals with the Skoda Slavia that is slated to launch later this month.
The new Volkswagen Virtus will be based on the India-specific MQB A0-IN platform. This is the same platform that also underpins the Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Slavia. In terms of powertrain options, this mid-size sedan will be offered with two engine options. The first one will be a 1.0-litre TSI motor that develops 113 hp and 178 Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. You also have the top of line 1.5L TSI engine that churns out 148 hp of maximum power and 250 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed DSG. Upon launch, the VW Virtus, along with the Skoda Slavia, will be the most powerful sedans in its segment.
Volkswagen Virtus will have its World Premiere in India on the 8th of March. The New Mid Sized sedan will replace the Vento in the lineup and will go up against the lines of the Skoda Slavia, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City and the Hyundai Verna.
