Tesla Model S 100D travels 1078 kms on a single charge

Ever since Tesla Model S had been announced, its owner Elon Musk had been quite vocal about the excellent range of the company’s latest model. He would often flaunt how his latest creation could travel more than 1000 kms on a single charge. Now, recently, a Tesla Model S 100D has managed to cover a distance of 1078 kms (669 miles) to be exact, on a single charge, firmly confirming Elon Musk’s statement.

The Model S 100D which managed to achieve this feat was driven by a team from Tesla Owners, Italy. The car was installed with a special set of low rolling resistance tyres to help the team achieve the exceptional mileage. Other than that, the car was completely stock and managed to drive uninterrupted for 29 hours at an average of around 25 mph.

Tesla Owner Elon Musk was expectedly very enthusiastic about the record and was all teeth in his tweet, “Officially verified as the first production electric car to exceed 1000 km on a single charge! Congratulations Tesla Owners Italia!!”

To achieve this exceptional record, the Tesla Italian team had, unsurprisingly, turned off the air conditioning system for the entire hyper milling record attempt and according to one of the team members, Auto Pilot was engaged for much of the slow moving journey which averaged at around 25 miles per hour.

As per the official tests conducted by EPA Environmental Agency, the combined range of the Model S 100D is 539.1 kms or 335 miles and this figure is the most representative of what Tesla Model S owners can expect from their latest techie car. Still, with careful planning and implementation of clever driving techniques one can almost double the car’s range which is an impressive achievement nevertheless.

Tesla Model S and X 100D variants focus less on performance and straight line acceleration and more on range. Despite lacking the P badge, the Model S 100D is still blisteringly quick, capable of hitting 60 mph (96 km/h) in a mere 4.2 seconds.
