MG Motor is a UK based company and is owned by Chinese SAIC Motor Corporation. The company consists a portfolio of hatchbacks and compact SUVs.
MG Motor is looking to set shop in India very soon. The company is a subsidiary of Chinese company Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, better known as SAIC. SAIC Motor Corp has been looking to enter India for some time now and this could be their opportunity. The Chinese manufacturer has also been eyeing GM’s Halol Plant for a long time. SAIC might use this opportunity to set up a plant for MG Motor UK. According to reports, SAIC and GM are already in the process of signing the agreement for the said plant.
Recently General Motors India announced that it will be stopping domestic sales in India. The company had already stopped production of its cars like the Tavera MPV at the Halol factory during April-end. The company though will make use of its Talegaon Plant to export cars to South America and other markets worldwide. Cars like the Beat facelift and the Beat-based sedan Chevrolet Essentia will be manufactured here. It is also rumored that MG Motor and SAIC might use GM India’s existing sales and service network in India for its benefits.
MG Motor sells the MG 3 hatchback and the GS compact SUV in the UK. The MG 3 hatchback will compete with something like a Hyundai Grand i10 while the GS SUV will compete with the likes of the Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and Nissan Terrano. The MG 3 is powered by 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines while the GS is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol. It also comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission. The company also revealed its full size SUV the GS XS last year at the Guangzhou Auto Show 2016.
