MG Motor christens its upcoming Smart EV as ‘Comet’
MG Motor India has today announced that its upcoming small EV will be called as Comet for the Indian market. As per MG Motors the name Comet has been inspired from the 1934 British airplane which participated in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race.
The Comet will be MG Motors second EV, and the first mass-market electric car model for India and was expected to be officially unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo in New Delhi.
MG Motor currently sells the ZS EV and the Air EV will join it’s electric car lineup. The car maker also plans to use the MG Comet EV to shuttle government delegates as the ‘official EV’ of the G20 Summit, set to take place on September 9 and 10, 2023.
The new MG Comet EV is based on the Wuling Air EV that’s manufactured by SAIC-GM-Wuling since 2020, and also happens to be the best-selling electric car in China. MG Motor India plans to price the MG Comet EV between the ₹10 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh price range in our market. Powering the Wuling Air EV are two battery pack options – a 17.3 kWh and a 26.7 kWh LFP pack. Both battery packs make the same power output of 40 bhp what differs is the range on both of them, the smaller battery can take you 200 km on a single charge while the larger battery will get you 300 kms.
In terms of features the Air EV comes with an 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system being it’s key highlight, synthetic leather seats, dual front airbags and rear parking camera, climate control, on the inside while on the outside the funky style and design can’t miss your attention.
The car comes with alloys wheels, LED lights which includes a horizontal strip that runs across the bootlid. In terms of interiors MG Comet EV could come equipped with a large single-piece screen that houses the infotainment system and fully digital instrument console, sleek AC vents on the centre console, and rotary knobs to control the AC functions.
In terms of competition the MG Comet will rival the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3.
