Kia Syros Trademarked in India: Competing Against Hyundai Exter?

Will Kia Syros enter the micro SUV arena, possibly rivaling the Hyundai Exter, or does it represent an entirely new direction for the brand?

The recent trademarking of the name Kia Syros in India hints at the South Korean automaker’s preparations for another addition to its lineup in the Indian market. This could potentially take the form of a micro SUV, entering into competition with vehicles like the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, or it could introduce an entirely new product category.

In recent sightings, a camouflaged prototype of a compact SUV has been making rounds in India during its initial testing phase. Characterized by its boxy design and simplistic styling cues, the vehicle exudes a rugged appeal, suggesting its suitability for SUV enthusiasts.

Up front, slender LED daytime running lights adorn the bumper, alongside a clamshell bonnet and a grille design reminiscent of Kia’s larger SUV models sold internationally. On the sides, distinctive alloy wheel designs with square elements catch the eye, while door-mounted ORVMs enhance functionality. The lower body features black cladding, adding to its rugged persona.

A unique kink in the B-pillar and functional high rails on the roof further enhance the vehicle’s distinctiveness. At the rear, vertically stacked LED tail lights adorn the flat rear profile, contributing to its commanding presence.

While specifics about the engine remain undisclosed, potential options could include a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine or a 1.0-liter turbo petrol engine, with both manual and automatic transmission variants likely available.

With the micro SUV segment gaining traction in the Indian market, Kia’s foray into this segment with the upcoming Kia Syros could be strategic. The Tata Punch currently leads in monthly sales, leveraging a diverse range of powertrain options, including petrol, CNG, and electric. Kia’s introduction of multiple powertrain options could similarly broaden its appeal and capture a wider audience with its entry-level offering.
