The AMG SUV offerings are already pretty tough to handle, yet there have just been a couple of new additions to the list. These would be the new GLC 63 and GLC 63 coupe. The two stand out from other fast SUVs, and thereby have caught our attention.
The GLC came as a replacement for the original GLK that never managed to get an AMG model. The current GLC has a somewhat AMG version if you consider the V6-powered AMG 43. However this new 63 comes equipped with Affalterbach’s 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8. This would be the first time its being used in an SUV.
The 4.0 litre V8 helps it rank just above the GLA 45 and the GLC 43, and barely under the GLE 63 that comes with a 5.5 litre V8. Seeing as how the car is based on the C-Class, it’s basically an upgraded C63.
The GLC 63 comes with the usual contenders for an S that AMG provides, that being a b base-spec, 469bhp/479lb ft and has a mechanical limited-slip differential at the rear. The GLC 63 S comes equipped with a 503bhp/516lb ft and an electronically-controlled diff.
All of the models come with a ‘4Matic’ all-wheel drive system, that focuses power to the rear wheels, and brings it up to the front axle whenever necessary. The nine-speed ‘MCT’ automatic gearbox by Mercedes AMG comes fitted in all the vehicles.
The cars get particularly interesting when one focuses on the performance figures because, to 62mph, the GLC 63 is is somehow faster than the C63, even though it tips the scales at around two tonnes. The entry level version of the car does it in four seconds, whereas the S will do it in just 3.8 seconds. This is two tenths faster than the AMG Cs.
It is launched for sale around mid June, and will make its public debut next week, at the New York Auto Show.
