Ferrari has plans to launch its first SUV model by 2021

It seems Ferrari SUV is not a myth after all. While manufacturers such as Porsche, Aston Martin realised that it is necessary to have a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in the line up to keep people’s interest level alive and have the sales figure ticking, Italian car maker, Ferrari, known for its sleek and sexy, high performance sports cars had thought otherwise. In fact, Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne had famously said that he would have to be shot before building a Ferrari SUV.

Now, new reports are coming in stating that Ferrari has plans to build and release an SUV by 2021. The sources said that it is still in the early days of development, and it could have either two or four doors, but it will have more space than the most spacious Ferrari’s model on sale now, the GTC4 Lusso. It also will likely be aimed at the Asian market as Ferrari plans to sell as many as 2,000 units a year. This would make it easy for the company to continue increasing its sales, possibly past the 10,000-unit mark that exempts Ferrari from some US and European emissions regulations.

There are even further speculations rife in the air about the company’s attempt to build an SUV. In fact, a few sources report that the new Ferrari SUV to be built shall be based on the latest GTC4 Lusso’s platform. This does makes sense to us, as it is the only available four wheel drive platform in the lineup. Ferrari might also possibly include a V8 under the hood along with hybrid tech. This hybrid tech is part of Ferrari’s mass adoption of this technology across its entire engine range. Ferrari had been eyeing this move to improve its sales numbers and as well as its vehicle’s emission performance.

If the company does launch an SUV by 2021, it would be very interesting to see whether the CEO Sergio Marchionne does keep up with his word or not!
