MWI Car Sales Report – January 2018
We have the sales report for the very first month of the year. With 2017 ending on a high note with sales for Four wheeler doing remarkably well. The year ended on a sweet note with all players getting good sales figures. January has seen India’s number one car maker Maruti Suzuki registering a overall growth of 4.8 per cent while Mahindra has announced a rise of 32 per cent on the other hand the Japanese automaker Toyota has registered a significant total growth of 15 per cent. We find out the sales individually.
Maruti Suzuki had a good month selling 151,351 units in Jan 2018 as against 144,396 units it sold in Jan 2017. Domestic sales being 140,600 units and exports being 10,751 units against what it did in January 2017 with 133,934 units domestic and 10,462 units of exports. The major chunk of sales came from the compact segment that include the Swift (old-gen) Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, Dzire, and Tour S.
Hyundai Motor India announced a sales growth of 8.5 per cent for Jan 2018 over the same period last year. The Korean car maker sold 56,216 units, against the 51,834 units sold in January 2017 of which 45,508 vehicles were sold in the domestic market as compared to the 42,017 vehicles sold last Jan. Exports saw a huge chunk with 10,708 unitssent out in Jan 2018 compared to the 9,817 units exported during the same month last year. High on demand models for Hyundai were Grand i10, Elite i20, Creta & the new Verna.
Mahindra & Mahindra registered a sales growth of 32 per cent in Jan 2018 over the same period last year. The total sales stood at 52,048 vehicles, compared to 39,386 vehicles sold in January 2017. Mahindra sold 23,686 vehicles in January 2018, as opposed to 20,169 vehicles during January 2017 thus registering a growth of 17 per cent. Its Commercial vehicle unit sold 21,002 units compared to the 13,890 vehicles sold in January 2017, registering a growth of 51 per cent. A good January for Mahindra overall.
Toyota has reported a growth of 19 per cent in Jan 2018 over the same period last year. Domestic sales stood at 12,351 units over 10,336 units that the Japanese car maker did last Jan. Toyota has also exported 888 units of the Etios range in January, compared with 916 units that they sent last year. “The customer demand has consistently been strong and we have catered to the growing customer demand,” Toyota Kirloskar Motor Deputy Managing Director N Raja said in a statement. The success story of Innova Crysta and Fortuner sales growth continues in the New Year, he added.
Tata Motors announced a growth of 43 per cent in January 2018 selling 59,441 units against the 41,428 units sold during the same month last year. Sales figure is combined for passenger and commercial vehicles together with the passenger sales growing by 55 per cent managing to sell 20,055 units compared to the 12,907 units sold in January 2017. Tata Motors commercial vehicle division sold 39,386 units against 28,521 units last year and a growth of 38 per cent for Jan 2018. The company’s Commercial Vehicles sales from exports in January 2018 went up to 4,900 units, with a growth of 5 per cent over last year. Commenting on the company’s sales performance, Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “This month we have grown by 55 per cent over last January, on the back of good demand for our new generation products – Tiago, Tigor, Nexon and Hexa. While Tiago continues to lead the growth in cars at 27 per cent, the Nexon and HEXA have attracted a new set of SUV buyers, resulting in 188 per cent growth in UVs.”
Honda Cars India registered monthly domestic sales of 14,838 units and exports of 398 units in January 2018. This number is slightly lower than its January 2017 figure. The company had managed to sell 15,592 units in last Jan. The plus point for the Japanese car maker is that its held on to the cumulative growth of 17 per cent selling 144,802 units during April 2017 to January 2018, against 124,114 units it did last year. Commenting on the company’s performance, Yoichiro Ueno, President and CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd. said, “HCIL has witnessed strong growth of 17 per cent in the ongoing fiscal year and we expect the market to further pick-up after the anticipations regarding Union Budget are stabilized. HCIL will showcase our strong line-up for the next fiscal at the upcoming Auto Expo which will further strengthen our position in the Indian market.”
