Hyundai Kona spotted running laps at the Nurburgring

The new upcoming Hyundai Kona compact crossover is all set to offer a much smaller option than the Tucson and Santa Fe that are in the company’s current CUV lineup. As observed in a new batch of spy photos that have recently turned up, the little car was taken to the Nürburgring for a high speed workout.

Hyundai is using a much more adventurous styling for the Kona than the style on its other crossovers. The Kona model comes with trendy split headlights that have a strip of LEDs right below the hood as well as some more conventional illumination that is positioned lower. The camouflage at the rear shows a rounded rump. The skinny taillights go along with the styling of the units placed at the front.

Based on the spy photos, the interior might possibly be not quite as stylish as compared to the ultra modern exterior. Well, at least not in this developmental stage. The cabin comes with basic black materials that aren’t really that eye-catching. The high-mounted infotainment display seems rather boxy as well, with the way it is integrated into the center stack.

The Kona is reported to be built on a platform that belongs to the European i20 and will likely use a varied range of small turbocharged engines. There are some rumours that the company might only offer the Kona with a basic front-wheel drive but that would be a poor choice for the market since most smaller crossovers have to provide all wheel drive at least on the higher trims. Most of these small crossovers make all-wheel drive available at least on higher trims.

The compact crossover segment is filling up with more and more competition, and the Kona would have to hold its own against vehicles like the Honda HR-V. Plus, Nissan Juke, Chevrolet Trax, and the Mazda CX-3, with the Ford EcoSport on the way.
